SDCC 2010 - The Hub Transformers Panel - 1st Looks at 'Prime' Designs!
By BaCon on Thursday, July 22, 2010
Discovery Kids will become the Hub.
Hasbro Studios and Discovery Communications have made a great channel, hired Margaret Loesch who was the executive on Generation 1, My Little Pony, Batman, X-Men, and Power Rangers. She was also responsible for the Smurfs with NBC.
Chances are if you like a toon. Margaret worked on it.
Margaret Loesch says she did not ruin a generation of us.
Loesch: Shows were hard to sell because networks said they ruined kids.
Loesch: Talent Like Orci and Krutzman have made my job easy. They were involved with Transformers; Hercules and Xena: Warrior Princess; Legend of Zorro; and Star Trek. They are the excecutive producers on Transformers Prime.
Loesch: Hasbro has done a great job with being a partner. They have been very supportive.
Loesch: Arron Archer is VP of Hasbro Labs and we all know him as the keeper of the Transformers lore.
Loesch: I am produ to be working on this kind of stuff since G1.
What's the big idea behind Transformers Prime?
Orci: We grew up on G1 and we wanted to bring that back and really dig into the robots back stories and meet new humans and more.
One of the core differences is Orci and Krutzman are involved, deeply and emotionally.
The big difference is the technology using all CG for the cartoon.
Now we can explore the characters more and follow them between episode to episode, making the cartoon more sophisticated.
How are humans involved now?
In the show the humans are partners with the Transformers. We see them as if we are living with them,
We are incorporating the lore to make use of what worked and what didn't. Based on the Hasbro lore book of 350 pages.
The following clip was played:
Questions and Answers
Asking Cullen about favorite roles. The one that stands out is "Dynasty" (laughs)
Peter can you give me in your "Roman, Transform and roll out." Cullen does it.
As the mother of a Son who was raised to your voice - he cannot be here because he passed away - I want you to know when I hear you speak, you are the soul of Optimus Prime.
Will we get to hear Megatron say "Decepticons Transform and Raise Up!"?
Maybe.
Will we see anymore characters in the show? Soundwave, Starscream and Bulkhead are here with us.
Anything new or different from the previous Prime roles?
No, Optimus was conceived with certain elements to him and I am proud of keeping that together. He's a great character and that an important part of our loves. Good character is important.
In the years since the movie, the Autobots have stayed behind in case something else happens. Which it does, lead by Megatron.
Autobots cannot return to Cybertron. So they settle on Earth and learn how to live on someone else's planet.
With Megatron we are bringing back a lot of Decepticons and some who have not taken a side yet.
The look of the Transformers is trying to keep things stylized. Where a human looks too real it looks a bit creepy, so for the actual look, they are going for a cinematic feel.
With a time budget, they don't have time to design all the CG elements. So we set these guys in their own environment that is highly stylized.
The starting series is G1. When we design a character we look at the G1 characters and work from there. We are happy to see fans say the "Bucket Head is Back"
We are pushing the CG are much as possible. Trying to make a new look that will impress people but still leave a G1 feel to the cartoon.
AUTOBOTS
Bumblebee looks a lot like the Movie character, a yellow Camaro. He is a scout with a boyish look.
Arcee is a motorcycle. She is blue and very tall and spiky looking. There's a tad of pink on her they say.
Cliffjumper - Red car similar to the (old-school muscle car) Dodge Challenger. His robot mode is big and bulky.
Ratchet looks mellow and there was not an alt mode shown. Panel speaker says "he was designed with a comfort vibe to him."
Humans!!!! Jack Darby is dark haired kid; Miko Tzuka,is dark haired girl; and lastly, Rafeal "Raf" Esquivel.
DECEPTICONS
Decepticon Troopers - Very dark looking, kind of like Ninjas. The alt mode looks like a suped up sedan.
Megaton is back as a Cybertronian jet, more streamlined and looks like the movie version. He only has a Cybertron alt mode due to his disgust with everything Earthly.
Optimus Prime - Cullen speaks on the speakers and he walks into the room. Prime is shown and the alt mode is revealed: a Peterbilt tractor trailer.
Cullen: The fact is that he is Optimus and has not changed. He stands for the good things in life that we love. There's a consistency that will always prevail.
"I have been killed a few times. But he always get the Matrix back.
"The group of people working on this are genius. I am always amazed with their vision on the show and work can get emotional sometimes."
A recording is play playing now with Cullen and Welker. This is the same clip that was shown at BotCon 2010.
What gave you the drive to revive Transformers? It's fair to say everyone working on the show has a love of Transformers in some way.
Will you guys keep the voices and such? Will we get all those same characters voices? But some will take on new ways and break new ground with voices. We loved the show since we were kids, so we want to keep that true.
What's it like to work with Michael Bay to Cullen?
It was great. It was a privilege to work with him, like working with a great general, who kept all the things in his head and putting the lore with the movie.
Do you think the new series will do well?
We hope so!
Unfortunately, Sue Blu, the voice director for Transformers: Prime has been replaced by a new person due to a death in her family.

He still needed Hasbros approval and some of the designs Hasbro completely redid and told him he was stuck with them

Most don't like what he did with Transformers, because they are too hard core. Thats the main thing. Though the blame for the look of the robots should be on Hasbro

I agree on the cuda/challenger! Ive always loved those cars and seeing one finally in a movie-esque design is awesome. I dunno about the horns on the hood. Never seen that on a car like this but it does say a little about CJ's characterization....

Im loving Cliffjumper. Although....Yep Im a Mopar geek here--they mistakenly referred to his alt mode as similar to a Charger, when its more like a Challenger or Barracuda. The Decep drone looks nothing like a sedan as a whole. The front clip DOES remind me a bit of a Chrysler 300C but the rear 2/3... read more

Yeah I must've over read the characters are G1 minus the Decepticon Drones, but they do look cool. I know you didn't bash, I actually enjoy reading a lot of your posts myself. And I do agree with you on some of that. Don't care for armada or energon. But I loved Cybertron. And I like th... read more
